South Africa is a unique country with diversity in terms of races and languages; with all the 11 languages
considered by the Government as being official languages.  Recently, the new Minister of Education proposed an initiation to offer subjects and courses using all the official languages.  The problem, apart from the financial implication, is that “the possibility of offering all
subjects and courses in all
official languages”
The objective of the study is to detail the perception of accounting students, at tertiary level, of offering accounting courses in their mother tongue – indigenous languages.  This study was carried out on a number of 400-randomly-selected respondents who are accounting students in their first and second years at the university.  Questionnaires were administered and data analyzed using qualitative data analysis for descriptive statistics and to establish general statements.
 

On completion, recommendations that may be useful concerning the initiative were made.   This may be of immense assistance since the initiative in yet to be implemented.
