This book gives you a good understanding of the basic knowledge you need to start and operate a small business in Canada. It discusses subjects like understanding the financial statements and the legal considerations. It tells you what kind of expert help you should be seeking. It discusses tax considerations, raising money, hiring employees, marketing your company, credit and collection, patent, trademark and copyright. It also discusses the option to buy a existing company or a franchise. There is also a section on bankruptcy, one on import/export and one on using the internet for the succes of your business as well as some other usefull information. The book also includes samples to illustrate and give a better understanding of what is explained in different sections of the book (for example there is an outline of a business plan and a sample of financial statements) There is also checklists that you can use to make sure you don’t forget anything (for example, a franchiose assesment checklist and a credit and collection procedure checklist). You will also find a Master Checklist wich guides you through all steps of starting your own company.
This book won’t give you an in depth knowledge of business but it is a good starting point for someone who has never owned a business before or for someone who needs to refresh their knowledge of small business in Canada. I twill also help a small business owner that need a little coaching on how to operate its business. It is easy to read and you don’t need to be an expert to know what they are talking about.
