Wipro applies thoughts, cuts costs but saves jobs.
Big IT companies in India are in the wrap of recession, and are
evolving innovative ideas to retain their skill based employees, so that at an opportune moment in the future they are inducted into the company without going through HR hassles.
Wipro, the 3rd largest in the IT sector in India has launched the SAFE (Skill Augmentation and Flex Employment) scheme six months ago. This scheme has two parts; one is Project Enrich and the other Project Rejuvenate.
The first one is for the employees recruited recently and not exceeded sox months of service. The idea is to retain these employees by employing them just 10 days in a month initiating a saving for the company. They have also been given the option of going to long break without loosing their jobs. For these 10 days of work they are offered 50% of their salary.
Project Rejuvenate is for senior employees. The offer enables the employees to pursue their hobbies freely or to join a NGO with 25% of their take home pay from Wipro. Pratik Kumar, the Head of HR group of Wipro disclosed this information to the media. Project Rejuvenate has got good response from the senior employees; about 1000 employees have shown interest making it the most successful innovative solution in this recession period.
Wipro’s offer to Kolkata employees to join its BPO arm did not find too many takers. The company is constantly trying to find ways to maintain present strength of employees while fulfilling the cost cutting exercises. Hence, the SAFE came into existence. 7000 new recruits are waiting to join the company, and 8000 more is expected to be recruited in the financial year 2010.
