Brussels Pensions:

Article Review   by:SM THOMPSON
ª

I must admit my colleagues were disappointed when none but the rich got the 1O,OOO pounds Pension, upon retirement -
and over three-fifths of single-pensioner households in Britain have an income of less than £1O,OOO.

Meanwhile European judges have thwarted an aattempt to force retired Eurocrats to pay income tax on their Brussels pensions as a ruling by the Luxenbourg based European Court of Justice upheld the long held exempton that spares former EU Officials from paying national taxes on their EU earnings. Would the rest of us
retired professionals were so fortunate.

But, these people pay a special low rate EU community tax that starts at just eight per cent. So where is all this leading to as I read that we are lining the pockets of the rich with more money.

Apparently, former EU commissioners including Lord Kinnock and Lord Mandelson can receive their five figure taxpayer funded pensions at far lower tax rates than are paid by other British citizens: Lord Kinnock has a £96,OOO pension

However, the Daily Express continues ... the decision is bound to infuriate millions of pensioners. The row follows concern at the spiralling cost of retirement deals with former EU bureaucrats. But the Luxenbourg court ruling upholds a "privileges and immunities" protocol that dates back more than 5O years. The case of French tax authorities in Eure-et-Loire to impose a "solidarity wealth tax" on two retired EU officials living in France.
The case of a couple whose case went to the Court of Justice which ruled income paid by the EU and subject to EU tax could not be taxed ... either directly or indirectly by a member state. So the Political Editor of the
Daily Express does not stop there but cites the news of Lord Kinnock's wife former Euro MP Baroness Kinnock who is a receiver of a £67,OOO EU Pension .. .. how fortunate can you become!

Still, lets not stop here either and former Labour Cabinet Minister Lord Mandelson will be entitled to claim a Brussels pension of more than £35,OOO when he reaches 65. So the figures for these Eurocrats/retirees is certainly very high in terms of their pensions.

When attempts to increase personal pensions failed we were advised to return to work and/or voluntary work which is a great support and fortunately instead of Old Mrs Jones sitting in the corner alone she can now
return to lecturing at home and internationally! Hard work pays UP!
