Learning to Think Lean: Six Steps With Review Points

Article Summary by: easwarkumar

Original Author: Pradeep Mahalik
Lean is for elimination of all types of waste by reducing time lag between customer order and shipment.Six steps that are
essential for implementations and maintenances of lean philosophy are (1) Value, (2) Value Stream, (3) Flow, (4), Pull, (5) Perfection, and (6) Replication.
1 Value : Value depends on customer's view on the product quality, utility and price.
2 Value Stream Mapping  : There are three main activities in this namely process steps that definitely create value, process steps that create no value but are necessary due to the current system, and process steps that create no value and can be eliminated.
3 Flow  : This step of Lean is known as rapid product flow (RPD) in which waste is eliminated in each stage of the process flow.
4 Pull : Aim of this step is to eliminate excess inventory. The seven wastes of any process are defects, over-production, transportation, waiting, inventory, motion and processing.Inventory being a main source of waste the pull system eliminates inventory by balancing production and demand.
5 Perfection : The organization has to implement continuous improvement of the present system and try to achieve a perfect system.
6 Replication : This Lean step is to confirm the implementation of the system and the improvements achieved so that these steps can be implemented in similar situations with out much effort.
