Abstract: In search of Excellence is indeed a road-map to show the way to millions of people across the world how to succeed.
The authors have presented case study results of their research project conducted from 1979 to 1980. In this world famous book they have investigated the attributes common to the best-run companies in America. They had taken a sample of 43 companies from six major industries, and examined their business practices closely. In this book, they have published lessons from America’s Best-Run Companies accounting for their success. Authors have carried out various examples from personal surveys relating to motivation, productivity, and customer satisfaction. It focuses on training, creativity, innovation, initiative and personalized service to the customers. Setting high standards in an organization makes others to follow you and your level of excellence acts as bench mark for others. As a market leader you must lead all the way in every aspect of business be a marketing campaign, product quality, delivery or after-sale service .This is achieved trough motivating your work force, continuous innovation and creativity to develop cost-efficient business solutions /products.
The authors have emphasized that the leader must infuse enthusiasm commitment, evangelism, good work culture of shared values and taking risk to invent/discover. The main trick is respecting all cultures / religions, reinforce capability / capacity of individuals, revitalize / redirect energy of people through appreciation and reward. Encourage people to research, experiment, innovate and improvise to maintain cutting edge
The books is well structured and it contains chapters like -- Successful American Companies ,The Rational Model, Man Waiting for Motivation, Managing Ambiguity And Paradox, A Bias for Action, Close to the Customer, Autonomy and Entrepreneurship, Productivity Through People, Hands-On, Value-Driven, Stick to the Knitting, Simple Form, Lean Staff
Although their results were published 20 years ago, those are still relevant for companies operating in emerging market Today looking back their eight principles may seem like common sense, but their research in this area was the first to identify these qualities and write down systematically.
This book is highly recommended for middle and senior level managers/ leaders who are looking for out-of-the-box solutions
