Stress and Stress Management Before I go into the basics stress is something which a common man calls it as tension. Every individual is stressed differently for identical problem. The intensity of stress in each individual may depend upon the following factors: Genesis Family background Physical health Experiences in the past Lack of sufficient Knowledge in his work area Working environment Nature of stress: There are two main approaches to defining “stress”. One of these considers stress as a characteristic of the environment . The other emphasises the individual response to the environment .Selye , who invented the term “stress” emphasizes the latter aspect. We shall define stress from Selye viewpoint , thus : stress is the body reaction to anything that threatens to damage the organism . It is the physiological wear and tear caused by attempting to adjust to events that caused emotional and other forms of arousal Situations that caused stress reaction are called stressors . A stressor in ant event that subjects the individual to unbearable demands. For every students , examination is not a stressor . Nor does every wife feel anxious about her child performance. But when a individual does not know how to deal with situations , he is put under psychological pressure . That is, he is under stress. Stress reactions: When the stressors are severe , or when they last for a long time , they give rise to stress reactions. Selye has identified various symptoms that occur as reactions to stress .
Some Symptoms of stresses 1. Irritability , over-excitation or depression . 2 Tension and alertness. 3. Loss of appetite or excessive appetite. 4. Insomnia. 5. Inability to concentrate . Stress management (Coping with stress ) Many people manage to handle even extreme stress adequately . Stress management strategies ( or successful ways of coping with stress ) may be classified into three general categories These are 1. Attacking the problem 2. Reappraising the problem. 3. Accepting the problem, but lessening the physical effects of stress. 4. Undergoing Stress reduction therapy like Yoga etc. Inspite of all the above every person may have to undergo stress sometime or the other depending upon the situation. In case of failures of kin or serious sickness of a close relative the intensity of stress in related person cannot be reduced even he has undergone stress management training. However good results can be seen in external influencing factorslike work environment. >>>>>>>>>>> . ,
