Shanker ( Dilip Kumar ) and Krishna ( Ajit ) are all time best friends, who can die for the sake his friend ship.Shanker runs his tonga through out the village to earn his Rozi and Roti, whereas Krishna does the job of a carpenter.
Shanker loves Rajni ( vyjayanthimala ) daughter of his distance aunty. On the other hand Krishna is being loved by Shanker's young sister Manju. This is a one side love affair. Incidentally, Krishna visits Shanker's residence to attend the call of minor repair work at his home. There he finds Rajni and he falls in love with her at first sight.
Soon Shanker learns that Krishna too has fallen in love with Rajni. He draws out a solution. On the day of Pooja, every woman offers flowers to God. He mentions that if Rajni offers yellow flowers, Rajni should marry him. Krishna objects to this saying that Normally yellow flowers are offered to God. Shanker agrees and makes it clear that white flower will reserve his right to marry Rajin. This conversation is being overheard by Manju. She does not like the idea of losing Krishna at any cost. She rushes to the temple with a view to replace the flowers. This is being wintnessed by Krishna, who is standing beside Shanker with his eyes half open to find the trick. He comes off the temple immediately out of anger and frusration with a feeling that his friend has breached the trust. It bells over the temple to annouce that the Pooja is over. Shanker opens his eyes to find that Krishna has gone away.
With a view to find him he too comes out of temple. Krishna is running against him. Shanker reaches him asks him why is he behaving like that. Krishna, still with anger, accuses his friend for his mallicious act. He says that he ordered his sister to change the flowers so that he could marry Rajin. This annoyes Shanker a lot. And there is a great fight between the friends. The misunderstanding breaks their friend ship.
In the village, soon the bus services replaces man handled Tonga and machine human labour 'Shanker as a leader protests this. But there was no siolution. The authorities orders him to take their tonga ahead of bus. If done bus services will be discon tinued. It was a hopeless job. The race between tonga and bus was a just a joke, ridiculous. How a tonga can over take buses. But Shanker accepts the challenge and starts the job all alone. Soon he is joined by Rajni, Manju and all the members of the village. They prepare a new road to run their tonga. Depressed and frustrated Krishana tries to lay obstacles in the path of his friend. Soon the race between tonga and bus is organised. shanker wins the race. And Tonga survives. Bus services be continued. Krishna realises his folly and hands over Rajni to Shanker.
