Ioan Gruffudd, possibly better known as "Hornblower" stars as William Wilberforce with Michael Gambon, Albert Finney, Rufus Sewell and Romola Garai supporting.
Wilberforce campaigned tirelessly throughout his life to bring an end to slavery in Britain.
He was a young Member of Parliament with a glittering political career a head of him, but chose to champion a cause that was tantamount to treason at the time, speaking out against the huge injustice of the slave trade.
This is a fine historical drama and is both compelling and moving.
The script is extremely good, particularly regarding some of the witty exchanges in the House of Commons.
Ioan Gruffudd puts in arguably his finest performance to date, fleshing out a sensitive, fragile and intelligent man of great courage.
Michael Gambon is superb as ever, with Albert Finney adding a fine performance as the reformed slaving ship's captain who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace".
