Evolution of Indian Cinema

Bollywood concepts have undergone sea changes, thanks to the evolution of the taste of the vast Indian population. Gone are the days when people used to watch highly predictable storylines. Films which dealt with social issues formed the first genre in the 60’s .Creations like “Do Bheega Zameen “ and likes were reflection of the social setup of the nation of those times. Western influence showed their effect on the thought process of the filmmakers a decade later. Social issues had less relevance now and more prominence was given to the entertainment value. Films of this category usually dealt with the Good Vs the Evil confrontation and an overdose of melodrama was mixed in to keep the audience glued to their seats.Multistarrers were a common factor then and the stories were usually too long to be compressed into the 3 hour standard format. Parallel cinema flourished in the 80’s to provide the audience with more meaningful form of entertainment. The new school of thoughts ushered in more realistic cinema and stories related to middle class families began to be made to which the Indian cinemagoers began to relate more.Naseeruddin shah,Om Puri,Smita Patil etc formed the new genre icons. The 90’s saw a new bunch of actors trying to make it big in the industry. Cinema success became more dependent on marketing hypes. Action themes were more in need for the new generation who detested old thoughts ,Though western influences were prominent ,Indian films had a uniqueness of its own which the world audience slowly started accepting mainly for its entertainment quotient what with a dozen of dance and song sequences figuring commonly in almost all the films.

A bunch of new young directors have dominated the scene now and have started changing the face of Indian cinema. The audience now put more emphasis on the storytelling and direction style than to the subject  itself .People have also started accepting new inexperienced artists provided the subject treatment is different .The stories have become varied and stands out by its innovative depiction. Going forward, Bollywod would evolve further and find its lustful place in the international arena for its excellence.
