Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun

Movie Review   by:sardonicus
ª

Porn actress Jennifer (Cheryl Dent) is released from the psychiatric ward and goes on a trip into the Californian desert. On the road she meets a group of nomadic slackers who spend their time taking drugs and committing random acts of violence. Together, they decide to visit the “Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun”, the scene of a bloody massacre some years before. Shortly after their arrival Jennifer´s nightmares – the reason for her stay at the sanitarium – seem to become reality. The putrid smell of rotting corpses hangs in the air, and soon the members of the group start to disappear one by one ...

A movie in the visual style of Seventies´ classics like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” – or really a rediscovered Seventies film, like the prologue suggests? Anyway, this is an entertaining   and charming genre bastard containing elements of Seventies hippie movies, road movies and horror classics, with a little bit of Russ Meyer thrown in. The acting is on the spot, as is the cinematography, and there is a lot of strange humour to be found in this odd, but likable independent film.
