Aditya Chopra, film writer and director came up with his 2nd original creation, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ in 2008 after the mega hit ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’.
Shahrukh Khan is the romantic hero of the Yash Raj banner and he has proved himself again in this film. It is the story of Surinder Sahni, a small cog in a big ‘sarkaari’ wheel, living an ordinary 9 to 5 existence. A simple guy wearing big black-framed spectacles, Surinder is a common man with genuine principles. He has a best friend who revels in the name of Bobby aka Balwinder (played by Vinay Pathak). The movie begins when Surinder Sahni has to circumstantially acquire a new wife, Taani (Anushka Sharma, daughter of his professor), who’s mourning the untimely exit of an old love. The circumstantial marriage of Tanni upsets her and she is not able to accept Surinder as her husband. Devoid of love for Surinder, Taani commits herself as a devoted wife. Surinder hides his love for Taani and agrees to live with her as a friend.
Taani enjoys dancing. Surinder makes her join Shiamak Dawar dance classes where he disguises himself as the ‘macho’ guy named Raj and becomes close to Taani. Taani falls in love with Raj and decides to elope with him on the day of her final dance competition. Surinder tests his true love for Taani and wants to know if she loves Raj or him as a person. Surinder’s love wins when Taani realizes that Surinder is her ‘God’ on earth (depicted by the song, ‘Tujhme Rab Dikhta hain, Yaar main kya karo’) and it is then when Surinder reveals his reality as Raj. Raj dies and Surinder lives with Taani as a happily married couple.
The story is very simple. The characters are common yet very strong by nature. Surinder’s character is the strongest element of success for the film, which has been very well portrayed by Shahrukh Khan. The desi character of Surinder is not at all comical but very appealing. His looks, lifestyle, devotion towards his wife and work, commitment and strength are the USP’s of the film.
The Punjabi culture has been beautifully depicted at a low cost. The simple colors and music in the film add to its aesthetic beauty. Overall a simple, sweet romantic, musical love story which teaches us that,
‘Love is power, not style’, and ‘Beauty lies in simplicity’.
