STORY OF THE MOVIE
Before I tell you the story of the movie crimes and misdemeanors let's get familiarize with the characters of the story.
MAIN CHARACTERS
- Lester : He is father-in-law of Cliff Stern and a successful television producer.
- Cliff Stern : He is one of the main characters of crimes and misdemeanors. He is a struggling documentary film maker.
- Miriam Rosenthal : She is Wife of Judah Rosenthal.
- Halley Reed : She is beloved of Cliff Stern and the associate producer of Lester.
- Wendy Stern : She is wife of Cliff Stern and daughter of Lester.
- Dolores Paley : She is a flight attendant.
- Judah Rosenthal : He is one of main characters of the story, he is very successful ophthalmologist in the story.
- Jack Rosenthal : He is brother of Judah Rosenthal and has worked as a gangster for small time.
- Ben : He is patient of Judah Rosenthal who is rapidly loosing his eyesight.
Crimes and misdemeanors is a actually mix up of two stories, one is about a ophthalmologist Judah Rosenthal and another is about Cliff Stern who is a struggling documentary maker. It is a story of New York city where both Judah Rosenthal and Cliff Stern live. The story of these two characters run parallel throughout the movie and never coincide with each other, only in the end it is come to know that these two stories are interrelated. Judah Rosenthal is a respected eye doctor but because of the human nature he is in affair with a flight attendant Dolores Paley. Now Judah Rosenthal is in great difficult situation because his lover Dolores Paley force him to leave his wife Miriam and marry with her but Judah loves his wife more than Dolores Paley and due to social pressure he cannot leave his wife Miriam and he tells Dolores Paley that he cannot leave his wife. Dolores Paley started to send letters to wife Judah Rosenthal telling about the affair but Judah Rosenthal by luck intercept the letter. Dolores Paley continue to pressurize Judah Rosenthal and she also know about the financial misdealing that Judah Rosenthal has done, due to this Judah Rosenthal was in great difficult situation. Judah was not knowing that how to solve this problem so he asked help from his patient Ben who is a rabbi. Ben advised Judah Rosenthal to tell the whole truth about his affair with Dolores Paley to Miriam but Judah is afraid of loosing Miriam so he does not tell about the affair to Miriam.
Due to this pressure Judah Rosenthal contact his brother Jack Rosenthal who is small gangster. Judah Rosenthal ask for help to Jack Rosenthal about the solution of the situation created due to his affair with Dolores Paley. Jack Rosenthal advice Judah Rosenthal to hire a Hit man to kill the Dolores Paley and which he found the best solution and agrees. Now when the Dolores Paley killed, Judah Rosenthal visit her flat to recover all the letters she has written to him to remove all the proofs of his affair with Dolores Rosenthal.
Now the movie turns to another story about a struggling documentary maker Cliff Stern. Cliff Stern does not have too much work to work on and continuously search for work. Lester is a successful producer and brother-in-law of Cliff Stern whom cliff Stern don't like. Lester gives job to Cliff Stern to work with him and asked to make a documentary about his life. The marriage of Cliff Stern and daughter of Lester Wendy was not so successful that is why he fall in love with Halley Reed. Halley Reed is associate producer and girlfriend of Lester. Cliff Stern is jealous of Lester and Halley Reed being together so he turned the documentary of Lester to a awful portrait. Halley goes to London where Lester offered her a producing job and when she return after few months, Cliff Stern come to know that she is engaged with Lester due to this Cliff Stern felt broken heated and realized that he is incapable of marrying Halley Reed.Movie is continue and in the end Judah Rosenthal and Cliff Stern meet at the wedding of Ben. Ben is Cliff Stern's brother-in-law and Judah Rosenthal's patient. Now it is my advice to you to watch this movie if you want to know more the only thing that I can tell you is that the movie ends with a narration by Prof. Levy, who had earlier committed suicide, about the interplay between morality and happiness.
