Review "Quo Vadis"
Jerzy Kawalerowicz made many films significant to the Polish cinema, including Pharaoh, The president''s death, Train, Mother Joanne from the Angels. But the popularity has brought him the greatest film of our nobelist novel by Henrik Sienkiewicz -
Quo Vadis (
Latin: Where are you going, where to aim). Not without the cause are talking about this film, as about most expensive, and certainly the biggest undertaking in the history of the Polish cinema. 127 filming days in Poland, of Tunisia, of France, 5000 stage props of c 2000 supernumeraries, and to it budget allocated for this purpose – almost 71 million zlotys, are feeling. For performer of central roles – it „ flower of the Polish acting ” – Boguslaw Linda, Paweł Deląg, Michał Bajor, Danuta Stenka, Franciszek Pieczka, Jerry Trela and making one''s debut on screens – Magdalene Mielcarz, these are only some of the ones which it is possible to admire in Quo Vadis. The action of the film is in progress in Rome, too of times rule of Nero. Winicjusz is arriving in Rome. At home Aulus Plaucjusz is getting to know lovely Ligia and is falling in love with her – „ at first glance ”, and supposedly such love doesn''t exist. But! Petronius wished to help his friend devise intrigue. Present at the court of Caesar Ligs descendant, what was implicitly mean that becomes a lover from now on make Marek Winicjusz. But very different is happening ... The film is telling about the war of two worlds: of pagans and Christians. Nero himself is an antagonist who believe in Christ, and try to make on every possible way drive them into trouble. Those aversion to the new religion that Caesar is considered to be a god and he want to treated him like a god. He loves to play with human feelings, loves to be admired and praised. Fortunately, not all Pagans these were , not all speak the narcissism and egoism. There were some who dared to go to those whose identification was a fish. Winicjusz was one of such people. In
Quo Vadis very well an intolerance towards other religions is portrayed. Penalties for the ones which weighed out to oppose „ miedzianobrody (chincopper?) ” were really brutal. On me a stage, in which lions let out to the circus are devouring defenceless people did an electrifying effect. Of course that was only a computer simulation, not less however made with great accuracy. All this combined with the great music - of Jan A.P. Karczmarek, to cause, that
Quo Vadis had become the cliffhanger. An art showed the director, of stage designers, but most of all the actors. Special effects coloured the whole. According to me it is the best film of final years, although already passed a little time from 2001.
Quo Vadis may equate with productions such as:
Pan Tadeusz, and
Katyn, and thus is certainly a film worth recommending.
