Disney's Tangled

Movie Review   by:Jlyn81

Disney takes on the fairy tale story of Rapunzel. I wasn't too familiar with the fairy tale but Disney did a good job in telling it. In the beginning, you are introduced to Mother Goethel (voiced by Donna Murphy) who finds a glowing yellow flower. By singing to it, she is able to extract it's power and stay young.

When the King and Queen were expecting their first child, the Queen was ill so the kingdom was sent to find the yellow flower since it was heard that it possessed magical healing powers. They would find the flower, changed it to an elixir and saved the Queen. The child was named Rapunzel and the family held a celebration by sending glowing paper lanterns into the heavens.

Well, Mother Goethel was not going to give up so easily. She gets into the child's room and realizes that when she sings, Rapunzel's hair glows and she is young again. But when she tried to cut her hair, the lock turns to brown. As you guessed, she takes Rapunzel and raised her as her own in a tower in the forest.

Years past and Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) is about to turn 18. Her only friend is a chameleon named Pascal. Rapunzel wants to leave the tower to see the stars that seem to come only during her birthday. Of course Mother Goethel doesn't want her to leave and sings of song of how mother knows best.

Along comes Flynn Rider (voiced by Zach Levi) who is running from the royal guards because him and two thugs stole a tiara. Flynn gets away from a royal horse named Maximus (he seems to be part blood hound) and stumbles upon Rapunzel's tower. Once in the tower, Rapunzel smacks him with a frying pan (this is hilarious), which is her weapon of choice throughout the movie. After stuffing him into a closet, she tries once again to convince her mother to let her leave the tower since she can now defend herself. Mother Goethel gets mad and Rapunzel changes the subject to gathering seashells for white paint for her birthday. This would be a 3 day journey and reluctantly, mother agrees.

Once out of the tower, Rapunzel convinces Flynn to take her out of the tower to see the stars and then take her back home. Only then she will return the satchel and tiara, which she hid from him while he was unconscious. Flynn corrects her that the stars are actually floating lanterns that are for the lost princess. Reluctantly he agrees to take her to see the floating lanterns without trying first to get rid of her.

So Rapunzel's adventure begins in the outside world. Unknown to her, Mother Goethel returns early after she encounters Maximum close to their area. Back at the tower, she finds that Rapunzel is gone. She discovers the satchel, tiara and Flynn's wanted poster and goes out to get Rapunzel back.

What would Rapunzel find when she finally sees the floating lanterns? Would she be able to realize that she's the lost princess that the kingdom has been looking for or will Mother Goethel be able to bring her back to the tower? You would have to watch the movie to find out.

The movie is hilarious with memorable characters and catchy songs. It's great to watch with the kids and even more fun when you watch it in 3D. I watched this with my husband and we both can't wait till this comes out on DVD.

  1. Answer  :    Mother Goethel wasn't a witch. She was just a woman who found the golden flower and sang to it so she could stay young. Then later on, had Rapunzel sing the song so Mother Goethel can still get the effects. Wednesday, December 29, 2010
