This novel directed by Tom Hooper is telling a story about the journey of The King George VI (the father of Queen Elizabeth II) to the throne of England.
Born as the second son to The King George V, George (starred by Colin Firth) should have not been too worried about the kingdom. Even he had to, his authority was only to provide supporting help to his brother, King Edward VIII.
However, as his only brother had a cursed-by-church affair with Wallis Simpson, the widow who divorced to two husbands, and finally decided to resigned from his duty, George had no option but to assume the throne.
Unfortunately, despite his capabilities and and all the capacities he had to lead the kingdom, George considered himself unfit to be a king. Why? Because he was troubled by speech disorder, which since the previous five years had made him not able to finish even the shortest speech.
His wife, Queen Elizabeth (starred by Helena Bonham Carter), had taken best therapists to cure him. But none of them and their methods gave any help. George gave up. But not did his wife. With all her heart, she tried to find another therapist. And she found it!
His name was Lionel Logue, an unempoyed actor who used to give therapy to the warrior who got stammer after the war. As he did not have any certificate usually held by doctors in common, Logue always told his patient not to call him 'Doctor'. "Just call me Logue," said him.
Shortly speaking, these two men finally met. George and Logue. However, since Logue seemed to require too many, what he considered, trifles, George got upset. Especially after Logue called him 'Bertie.'
But Logue stayed calm. He even invited his patient to make a bet. George refused. Logue insisted until George broke down and doubtfully follow his therapist's instruction.
Listening to classical music through a headset, he read script to be recorded. Unfortunately, George was too emotional to finish the reading. He put off the headset and set to leave. But before he got out of the room, Logue gave him the recording and he received it.
Time went running. The situation got worse. And George was still trapped by his stammer. Frustrated by his father's anger, George harshly took the recording. He listened to a smooth speech. So smooth that his wife could hardly believe it was him.
Realizing that he had lose the bet, George came back to Logue's house. He said he was willing to work hard as long as Logue would play his role. Logue agree.
Through this film, you will watch what does friendship mean. Friends do argue. The quarrel every now and then. However, as what Logue showed in this film, a friend always forgive and never give up supporting his friend.
It was his support that made George stand firmly on the throne. Without any stammer!
