Shrek has to be one of the funniest movies of 2001. This movie will make you laugh, and if you are a romantic like me, it may make you cry. So, I am sure you are asking, what is this movie about? Here is a summary of what Shrek is all about.
Shrek takes a number of fairy tales such as Snow White, Pinocchio, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and many others and combines it into one awesome movie. Shrek is definitely not your ordinary fairy tale.
The beginning of the movie begins with a story teller, sort of introducing you to the story. There is a beautiful princess that has a spell on her. Many knights have attempted to rescue her, but none have been successful.
So, we know the story of the princess. But, what about Shrek. Who is Shrek? I mean, isn't the movie called Shrek? Shrek is an ogre, a repulsive, green ogre that lives in a swamp and does not believe in fairy tales, or the concept of true love.
There are some men in the town that plan to capture Shrek for a reward, but hah, that is not going to happen. Shrek reveals his true 'ogreness' and scares them away.
Donkey is alone and lonely, and asks Shrek if he can reside with him. Shrek agrees to allow him to sleep outside for one night only. Later on in the night, he finds out that Lord Farquaad evicted all of the fairy tale creatures and sent them to Shrek's swamp. Shrek is furious and tells them to get out of his swamp. Donkey informs Shrek that he knows where Lord Farquaad is, and Shrek informs all of the fairy tale creatures that they are not welcome in his swamp, and he is going to go see Lord Farquaad and get this whole mess straightened out. So both Shrek and Donkey head out to Lord Farquaad.
Meanwhile, Lord Farquaad has his heart set on marrying Princess Fiona, who is the princess I mentioned earlier, so that he can become king. Once Shrek and Donkey arrive at the castle of Farquaad, Shrek wins the honor of rescuing Princess Fiona by defeating some knights in a tournament. Shrek tells Farquaad that all he is concerned about is getting back his swamp. Farquaad makes him a deal that Shrek cannot refuse. If he goes and retrieves Princess Fiona for him, then he will gladly give Shrek his swamp back, so Shrek agrees.
When Shrek and Donkey arrive at the castle where Princess Fiona is being held, there are a number of obstacles that they must go through in order to reach the Princess. This includes meeting up with the dragon, who ironically is a female dragon, that has fallen for Donkey.
When Shrek meets up with Princess Fiona, she believes Shrek to be her Prince Charming that has come to rescue her. That was the furthest thing from Shrek's mind. All he was worried about was getting her back to Farquaad, so that he could get his swamp back.
Shrek informs Princess Fiona that Lord Farquaad has sent him, and that he is the one that wants to marry him. The Princess states that if he is the one who wants to marry her, then he should have come to rescue himself.
Princess Fiona is not your average princess. She can kick some major butt, and she is basically exactly like Shrek, except she is in a dress, and she is a princess. Shrek and Fiona begin to fall for each other, even though Shrek denies it at first.
Princess Fiona is harboring a dark secret, a dark secret that only Shrek could understand.
You didn't think I was going to tell you the end of the movie and spoil it for you did you? So, do Shrek and Fiona end up happily ever after? Well, I was going to post a summary/review about Shrek 2. Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After, but that would give away too much. I rate Shrek four out of five stars. And, just for the sake of it I rate Shrek 2 five out of five stars, Shrek the Third three out of five stars and I rate Shrek Forever After three out of five stars.
The Shrek movies will keep you laughing throughout, and you will want to watch it again and again. It is a great movie for both kids and adults. The moral of Shrek is to never judge a book by its cover.
