Mutiny on the Bounty is a 1962 film that tells the story of the HMS Bounty, captained by the infamous Captain Bligh. In the film, Bligh was a sadistic captain who commonly flogged and tortured his crew. His second in command, Fletcher Christian was horrified at the way the crew is treated. He instigates a mutiny and takes over the ship.Captain Bligh and the loyal crewmembers are set adrift and the Bounty sails to an unchartered island. The crew eventually settles on distant
Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific, where the descendants of the Bounty mutineers live today.
This movie contains many historical inaccuracies. For example, there is no record of cruel treatment of the crew members at the hands of Captain Bligh. Also, Fletcher Christian was not the second in command, but simply a master’s mate. There are many more variations from actual historical events.
However, even with the inaccuracies, this is a well told story.Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard turned in excellent performances as Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh.Good special effects (for the time) were also delivered. While this movie did not win any academy awards, it was nominated for a total of seven, including best picture. This is one of the most famous sea adventure stories of all time.
This is an excellent adaptation (although somewhat fictional) of the actual events that transpired on the HMS Bounty in 1787.This film earns three and one half stars.
