The movie, Agneepath was released in 1990 under the Yash Johar banner and directed by Mukul S. Anand. A classic cult film, which, failed at the box office, but is remembered for the great performance by Amitabh Bachchan. The story revolves around the struggle of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan to win back his village Mandwa from Kancha Cheena’s (played by Danny D.) hands.
Deenanath Chauhan (Alok Nath) is an honest teacher residing in Mandwa with his wife, Rohini H. and his two kids, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Neelam Kothari. Alok Nath is accused of wrong doing by Kancha who has ill intentions. Deenanath is killed and Vijay (taught the poem ‘Agneepath’ by his father vows to seek revenge from the killers and win back his village.
Vijay and his family moves to Mumbai where he grows up to become a don in his own right ways, becoming the God of the weak and the needy while setting right the rich, wrong doers. In this process, he becomes a violent being, disliked by his mother. His sister falls in love with Krishnan Iyer (Mithun Chakravarty), her bodyguard while Vijay weds a nurse played by Madhavi. Meanwhile, Kancha has become more evil and looks for ways to end Vijay. The movie’s action scenes are very violent and very bloody. It becomes often difficult to watch them again and again.
Overall, the movie is impressive and worth a watch for strong hearted viewers.
Following the footsteps of his father, Karan is re-making the film and releasing it in 2012. The promos look equally violent and action-packed and so is the star cast. Sanjay Dutt is looking a true don. What needs to be seen is how much the sequel will impress the audience who has the violent image of Amitabh in their minds. It sure must meet the expectations of the audience. Time will answer this question but one thing is definite that the viewers are looking forward to its release.
Best wishes to Karan Johar.
