Today’s Special is a fun, quirky movie that the whole family can enjoy. It’s about a professional chef at a high-class New York restaurant who is passed over for promotion. He quits planning to go to Paris to find work. However, after a visit to his parents he learns their shabby Indian restaurant is floundering and decides to stay to help out. He is a professional chef but not in the Indian cuisine so he, at first, is at a loss what to do. He meets a friendly cabbie whom he discusses his problem with reluctantly. On exiting the cab the cabbie offers his help and gives the lead character his card with just his name, no phone or address. After some thought he decides to take the cabbie up on the offer of help and the fun begins. This movie is full of zany characters: a cab driver who happens to be a great Indian chef, the main character’s mother and father, a young female chef who is attracted to the main character. The stars are some truly wonderful Indian actors with great comedic skills: Aarti Mann, Amir Arison, Naseeruddin Shah the cabbie/chef (superb), Ajay Naidu.
Today’s Special is a movie for those who like the different, the zany, the heartwarming, and the somewhat crazy….not often found in the cookie cutter movies produced by Hollywood. The main actors are well known Indian actors (except for the female chef) who can pull off the over the top humor of this fine little Indie film. The script is excellent with many twists and turns and a happy, somewhat surprising ending. This is a unique movie, try it, you’ll like it.
