It's Christmas in the year 2093. Aboard the spaceship Prometheus is a team of highly-specialized scientists who have been in hyper sleep for "2 years, 4 months, 18 days, 36 hours, 15 minutes" with only an android named David (played by Michael Fassbender) to keep them safe. Their mission? To discover the origin of the human race. Supposedly, in a galaxy far, far away, is a mysterious planet where they hope to find the "Engineers" who created mankind. Their journey across deepspace leads to answers, but not the ones they seek.
Charlize Theron plays Meredith Vickers, a cold-hearted corporate exec from Weyland Industries who cares only about the trillion dollars her company spent to finance the expedition. Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace from
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo films) is an archaelogist who struggles to hold onto her faith in God while the other scientists, like her boyfriend, Dr. Charlie Holloway, search outerspace for answers to man's origin rather than the Bible. Speaking of origins, the name Prometheus comes from Greek mythology. Prometheus was a Titan god who was believed to have created man from clay.
I've watched enough space movies (
Star Trek,
Aliens,
Pitch Black) to know that whenever a special team is sent to explore the new planet, someone ain't coming back. So my heart was in my throat as I watched the team suit up and head out to explore the alien planet. During the expedition the scientists discover the body of a decapitated alien and prepare to take its head back to the Prometheus to analyze its DNA. David the android (you can never trust them!) secretly takes a alien pod that is oozing black liquid back to the spaceship. Suddenly an approaching storm forces the crew to speed up the return trip. Two scientists, Millburn and Fifield get left behind (bad news for them).
Don't worry, I won't spoil the ending of the movie here, but I will warn you: this film is not for the squeamish, or small children, for that matter. Unbelievably I saw one dad had brought his young daughter to see the show. I would like to comment on how she handled the intensely violent (and grotesque) scenes when the aliens attacked the humans...but I think I had my own eyes closed!
