The Raid : Redemption (2011) is an Indonesian Action movie. The original title is Serbuan Maut. The story is that of a SWAT team who moves in a complex to arrest a mobster and a drug loard. This complex is known to be the strong house of this gang. Many have tried but all failed. As the story progresses one could see why the complex remains undefeated.
The story is a fast moving one with spectacular action sequences. One cannot explain it in words (neither I am going to try!). The movie is mostly shot inside a complex but it gives its viewers a clear idea as it how hostile these places can be. It has not only good and fast action sequence but also some disturbing images. It also shows the brutality and cunningness of a mobster many of which, I believe was shown for the first time in a movie.
The same team of Gareth Evans and Iko Uwais is behind this movie. Their earlier movie was Merantau.
Iko played the lead role and had cinematic presence. The most admiring thing (as per me) is his physical fitness and the action sequences. He is trained in Indonesian Martial art.
This movie demonstrates Indonesian martial arts, Pencak Silat. Pencak is the performance aspects of the martial art, while silat is the essence of the fighting and self-defense. One argues/believes that one is required for the other and none can exists on its own.
Writer and director Gareth had the play presented beautifully. The SWAT team members were given special training to know the signaling and hand to hand combats. One cannot ask for more in this movie.
All in all: A must watch!
Enjoy.
