The movie ‘West Is West’ is a
sequel to East is East, released in 2010 in United Kingdom. The film has been
directed by Andy de Emmoney. The main cast is Om Puri, Ila Arun, Jimi Mistry,
Emil Marwa, Aqib Khan, Linda Bassett.
The story is about an Immigrant,
George Khan, played by Om Puri, who is really worried about his younger son,
Sajid Khan. Sajid is becoming a juvenile delinquent and hence his father brings
him to Pakistan for a vacation, hoping to change him for the good. George was
married to Ila Arun in India with whom he had no heir. With his ambition to
make it big abroad, he leaves his wife and family and settles in England. He
marries an English woman, played by Linda Bassett. With her he has 2 sons but
shares a distant relation with both of them. They are not to be blamed for it
as they were born of an English woman in a foreign land.
He brings both Maneer (his elder
son) whom he wishes to get married to a Pakistani lady and Sajid to Pakistan
with him, to show them his origin and bring them close to his roots. He meets
his first wife, Ila Arun who is not ready to forgive him for leaving her alone
and dejected, and for whom he only sent money from England. When she confronts
him, he realizes his mistake and tries to make up to her. Sajid is left in the
hands of the village Pir Saheb by George (Jahangir in Pakistan). Sajid also
befriends a boy of his age and soon starts liking the place under the influence
of the two new acquaints. Pir Saheb teaches him about life and happiness.
Maneer finds his true love in the
village and they are married. When George’s English wife lands up in India, the
situation becomes tough for all. The touching dialogues between the two wives
are really amazing. How Ila Arun forgives her and Om Puri shows the depth a
Pakistani (influenced by Punjab) woman gives to her man-wife relationship. In
the end, George goes back to England with his whole family. By this time Ila
Arun has forgiven everyone.
The emotional turmoil a person
undergoes once he immigrates abroad, has been well portrayed in the film. I
really admired watching it.
