Shutter Island (2010)

Movie Review   by:Dev25

Shutter Island was originally stated to be released on October 2, 2009, but Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures pushed the release date to February 19, 2010. This movie is based on Dennis Lehane's novel Shutter Island. Dennis is a screenwriter and a novelist.

The story takes us to an island called Shutter Island which is used as a medical rehabilitation center, Ashecliffe Hospital, back in 1954. This facility provides shelter to the most dangerous criminals as their last resort.

Two U.S. Marshals, Edward "Teddy" Daniels (DiCaprio) and his new partner, Chuck Aule (Ruffalo), travel to the Ashecliffe Hospital to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando, incarcerated for drowning her three children.
Shortly after arrival, a storm prevents their return to the mainland for few days. During this time Daniels finds some clues that made him to believe that he is looking at an institution which is actually doing experiments on patients. He also starts to connect the event of his wife's assassination to this island and believes that the assassin is present in this island. During the course of the movie he was informed that he has been drugged to make him look like an insane person and he will never be able to leave this place. Edward understands that now the hunter is being hunted.
Could it be possible that he is actually sick and all these things are just his imagination? Could it be possible that he is actually right and people made him stay as they want to safe guard their secret?

The movie and the story was beautifully presented and written. It has good pace and some power performance by Leonardo DI Caprio. Mark Ruffal and Ben Kingsley definitely were best at the supporting roles. The suspense is intense and the plot is carefully thought of. Even though, I think, this movie had everything that one would like to see, it failed to bag any awards.

This movie is directed by Martin Scorsese who has given us some great movies lately like Departed, Aviator. It seems that Leonardo has been his constant choice since 2002. He worked with him on Gangs of New York, Aviator, Departed and Shutter island.

The photography and locations of this movie were worth watching.

All in all if you are a person who loves movies with not so obvious ending then this is one for you.

Enjoy!
