Anne Sargeant in Sydney (Australia), had been associated with a netball court, suddenly had to leave her carrier. The problem could have seemed to be her age, 48. The employer replaced three younger women from her. Finally, newsreader whose name was Tracey Spicer (39) launched a regal action against Channel Ten after eight months. However, the reports ended up making a different story from the fact that Channel Ten just denied the allegations. Even though some women won the age discrimination in 2005, not only Anne but also some women still have been suffered from the
age discrimination. According to the University of NSW’s Professor Sol Encel, sexism has also reinforced “ageism” phenomenon. In fact, Anne’s previous colleague, Steve has kept his carrier. There may be some factors that have caused the age discrimination. First, the large growth in ageing population is pointed out by Dr Rob Ranzijn of the University of South Australia. Secondly, despite Linda’s comment (a campaigner for Aged Care Crisis) about older faces, viewers and customers apparently seem to prefer younger faces to older ones. As Jane’s case, even if women over middle of 40 try to place their carrier in higher, nobody employs them because of their age. They suddenly realize it might be too late to have the new carrier and go back to the previous fields to make ends meet. To solve these problems, there are some organizations such as Anti Discrimination Commission or the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in Sydney.
But if there is no solution between employers and employees, the case will be sent to the Federal Court. However, most people like Anne or Monica, do not follow their grievance up. It is because they do not like to owe tens of thousands of dollars in case they fail. There must be many women feel discrimination but only five percent sent complaints to Equal Opportunity Commission in Victoria. However, all circumstances are not bad because many employers told Senator Santro, federal Minister of Ageing that
older women should be the best after their maternity leave. Senator mentioned their highly motivation to learn new skills and warns companies creating discrimination.
Several of mature women who have work experiences have created self-business. Alma who used to work as a flight attendant of Virgin Blue has her own beauty salon. Carol who also was an employee at Virgin Blue works at a local galley. Anne runs her own netball coaching academy and working as a commentator for other television networks.
