Into the Woods

What do you get when you cross Cinderella,Red Riding Hood,Jack from "Jack and the beanstalk" a witch, baker and his wife and mysterious man and other fairy tale characters? Only the best musical ever,I'm talking about "Into the Woods",written by Stephen Sondheim,"Into the Woods is the ultimate fairytale crossover combining mystery, romance and comedy into two hours of music. It's a story about a baker and his wife who long to have a baby,Cinderella who longs to go to the ball and marry a prince,Jack who longs to be rich and Red,I'm not totally sure what she longs for, these characters have nothing in common yet they all meet during the play because of one task ,a witch set upon the baker and his wife in order to get a baby. Don't think it's all sweetness and light though, these fairy tales were based upon Grimm's fairy tales ,the stepsisters true to Grimm fashion do cut off parts of their feet and they do get their eyes pecked out.Act 2 is more brutal than Act 1 and three people die in Act 2 ,Cinderella's prince is not as charming as he seems because he seduces the Baker's wife and the Witch disappears halfway through Act 2 .A giantess ravages the village and the remaining characters are left without mothers, wives,or grandmothers ,yet through it all they manage to get through defeat the giantess and get their happy endings . The songs in this musical are catchy and it's a good play to take families to see. This play is quite popular with school whether they be community colleges or elementary schools. It's a fairytale fantasy. This is not just a play it was also made into a movie musical so you don't have to go to Broadway to see it,you could watch it on dvd.
