Cats Musical

Personal Experience Review   by:Jlyn81

I've heard about the CATS musical but I didn't know what to expect. So when the musical was going to be at the Orpheum Theater (for only two weeks), I decided to buy tickets to check it out. Since the main floor seating was cheap ($55) compared to other musicals, I decided to get seats on the main floor.

The show opens with the Jellicle cats gathering for their Jellicle ball. They sing their purpose to the human audience. This night is when their leader, Old Deuteronomy, will choose a cat from the tribe to be reborn in a new life on the Heaviside Layer (which after later research, I find that it's termed as heaven).

Okay, so the first act, you are introduced to specific cats with very interesting names. There is Jennyanydots, who is a large tabby cat. During the day, she sits but during the night, she rules the mice and cockroaches. Next is Rum Tum Tugger, who has a wild mane. It was funny during the number when he tried to get someone from the audience. Throughout his number, he would look at the person. It was very amusing. Next is Grizabella who was once a glamour cat but now looks like a homeless cat. Then there is Busopher Jones who is a fat cat that seems to be a part of the elite cats. Next are twin mischevious cats named Mungojerrie and Rumpeltezer. Their acrobact type act was entertaining. Last in this first act, you are introduced to the leader, Old Deuteronomy.

The first act kind of made me sleepy. You get some interesting acts but it wasn't very interesting. I even heard someone snoring behind my brother.

During intermission, Old Deuteronomy is seen sitting on the stage. He sits there, barely moving except for his head. When the second act starts to begin, you see the CATS actors playing with the audience (that's if you're on the main floor).

The second act was much more interesting and a bit more lively. Old Deuteronomy sings about what happiness is and is sung again by Jemima. Asparagus (or Gus) appears, was once a theater cat and now suffers from palsy. A cat named Jellylorum sings about him. Then Gus remembers when he played Growltiger and the scene changes about the story of Growltiger's last stand. This was a pretty funny scene. Next is about a cat named Skimbleshanks who is a railway cat. The actors made a train out of the 'junk' that can be found on the stage.

The act gets a bit more interesting when Macavity shows onto the scene. He is a master criminal and can never be found. I guess you can say that he is the villian of the Jellicle tribe. After a song about this master criminal, Macavity returns in an Old Deuteronomy disguise. When the disguise is revealed, Macavity fights with Munkustrap and Alonzo. Eventually, the tribe is able to get rid of Macavity but Old Deuteronomy can't be found.

So a magical cat named Mr. Mistoffelees shows off his magical skills to bring back Old Deuteronomy. This scene was a lot of fun (who doesn't like watching a magic show). After Old Deuteronomy returns, Grizabella returns. She sings 'Memory' beautifully. The tribe finally accepts her and is chosen to for the journey to the Heaviside Layer. After Grizabella goes up into the heavens, Old Deuteronomy sings his closing speech to the audience.

The musical overall was alright. I don't really hate it but I really don't like it as much as Wicked and Young Frankenstien. But at least I can say that I did get to see the CATS musical. I love the colorful cats costumes and the interaction of the actors during the later part of intermission.
