The Christmas Carol is a play depicting the life of an unprivileged person, named Scrooge. At a young age he was admitted in a boarding school by his father. A person who never received love in his life cannot have any emotion .Similar was the situation with Mr. Scrooge. He did not give any importance to Christmas.
Mr. Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s old business partner was also like Scrooge. As a result, when he died his spirit had to move around the world spreading the message of goodness bearing the load of the heavy chain wrapped on his body. He also visited Mr. Scrooge & warned him to improve himself. He gave him the last chance by which he can change his attitude. He told him about the three ghosts which will haunt him that night.
The first ghost arrives and shows him his past Christmas scenes. The first scene shown to him was of a boarding school, where everyone was going to their home but there was an unclaimed child weeping aside. It was Scrooge whose parents did not come to receive him. Another scene was when his sister had come to receive him but he refused to forgive his father and go back. The third scene was of his breakup with his beloved, Belle when he gave more importance to money than relations. Scrooge could not bear anymore.
The second ghost had shown him about the present Christmas scene. He took him to Mr. Bob Cratchit’s home .Mr. Cratchit was an employee of Scrooge who was really poor. He used to get a very little salary from Scrooge. He had a physically challenged son for whom he could not afford a good medical service. Still he had a great respect for Mr. Scrooge as he thought that whatever little comfort he has is because of Scrooge only. The second ghost had shown him how happily they celebrated Christmas in spite of such a poor financial condition. Scrooge slowly started realizing his mistake. He began to feel emotional for the Cratchit family. He started having mercy on Bob’s handicapped son.
The third ghost or the ghost of Christmas yet to come, shown him two men with whom Scrooge used to do business. They were discussing about a dead men’s funeral. They were not willing to go to the funeral unless a free lunch is provided there. Later the third ghost takes him to the dead men whose body was not claimed by anyone. Scrooge was shocked to see the face of the dead men. It was of Scrooge himself. Then the ghost took him to Bob Cratchit’s home where he saw Mrs. Cratchit and her daughter Martha. Cratchit’s handicapped son had at last passed away. Mr. Scrooge experienced a deep sorrow in his heart. He promised that he will honour Christmas in his heart.
At the morning Scrooge found himself coming out of the dream. It was Christmas Eve. He had changed completely. He was better than his word .He did everything he promised and infinitely more. He raised Bob Cratchit’s salary to a figure that left that bewildered gentleman gasping and to his handicap son, he was a second father. He provided doctors for the little lad.
As for the three spirits Scrooge never saw them again.
