Ghetto

Personal Experience Review   by:DaphnaPilowsky

Only the manager of the theatre survived to tell the story
The story of a conflict between physical survival and cultural survival. The story of life in Vilna’s ghetto which consisted of  efforts to live  for another day, another week, another month – on one hand – and the wish to preserve Jewish spirit  and give  the Jews an illusion of normality..
The story of the Jewish police commander, who was appointed by the Germans and, in spite of his horrible task,  makes huge efforts to save as many Jews as he can, - even by scarifying others.
The story of the Jew who made fortunes by doing business with the German army.
The story of the intellectuals who opposed the theatre for the reason of  “A cemetery is   no place for a theater “
And above all – the story of the Jewish theater in the Ghetto which continued to perform almost till the last liquidation.
The play is based on reality. Many characters are real people who lived (and died) between 1942 – 1943.
And on the stage, like in real life, only the  manager of the theatre survived to tell the story
