ARMS AND THE MAN is a drama written by BERNAND SHAW. It was written in 1894. The background of the act is the war between Bulgaria and Serbia. Raina was a young beautiful lady and she loved a young man called Sergius. He was a soldier. On the starting of the play we can see Raina standing in the balcony. Suddenly her mother Catherine enters and tells her good news that they have won the battle against Serbia and she also told that they had it because of the Calvary charge lead by Sergius. Louka comes into the room and tells them to close all windows and doors as there is shooting sounds. After some time Raina blows out the candle and goes to sleep. Suddenly the shutters where opened from outside and a man enters. He says Raina to keep quiet other wise he will shoot her. He also said that if she behaves properly he will not harm her. He was a Swiss solider and his name was Bluntschli. Later there was a knocking sound of Bulgarian soldiers who was in search of the escaped soldier. But Raina hide him behind a curtain and saved his life. When the Bulgarian soldiers gone he he said all about him that he is an Swiss soldier who comes to fight for cash. He also said about the foolish act of the Bulgarian officer Sergius who lead a Calvary charge. He said if the right bullets were given all the men would be dieing. On hearing bad things about Sergius Raina became angry on Bluntschli and said him to go from her house but later her mind changed One day Nicola and Louka were standing in the garden. When they where talking they heard the sound of Petcoff commeing Nicola runs towards Petcoff and Louka went to make tea. Petcoff was the husband of Catherine and was the major of Bulgarian army. When Catherine, Raina and Petcoff was seen together they started talking many things while they where talking Sergius enters into the scene. Sergius talks about the country to all. After talking for some time Catherine and Petcoff went to see the new electric bell, keeping Raina near Sergius. As they where talking Louka entered and Raina went to dress for going for a walk. Then there takes place a talk between Sergius and Louka in there talk Louka told that Raina is making love to others. This made Sergius angry on that time Raina comes to the Sergius and tells that she was ready for the walk. At the same time Catherine came and told Sergius to go to the library that Petcoff is calling him. Petcoff was asking his old coat to Catherine. After some time Louka came and said to Catherine that somebody had came to see her. It was the Swiss captain came to return the old coat. Raina and Catherine tried to send him back but Bluntschli wanted his bag Catherine told that she will send it by post.
As they where talking Petcoff and Sergius saw the Bluntschli and they called him inside. Petcoff said that he is his enemy friend. Petcoff says Bluntschli to stay there until he was back to Switzerland. At last Bluntschli agrees it. One day Bluntschli, Petcoff, Sergius, Catherine and Raina were sitting in the library. Petcoff was reading newspaper Bluntschli was writing orders and Sergius was signing it. On that occasion Petcoff told Catherine that he will be fully comfortable only if he have that old coat. Catherine told it was there itself but Petcoff argued, at last Catherine told Nicola to take the coat and come. It was Catherine who placed it back in the blue closet when she got it from Bluntschli. After some times Raina and Bluntschli started taking Raina told that she had told lie two times to save him and she told that if they understand that it is in this house Bluntschli took refuge that night they will kill him. Raina also told to Bluntschli that she had kept her portrait in the coats pocket on hearing this Bluntschli said that he never got her portrait. After some times Louka comes with a heap of letters and telegrams for Bluntschli when he read one letter he got the news that his father has been dead and many of his properties and hotels where given to him. When no one was near Louka Nicola told Louka to behave well. At that time Sergius enters into the room and Nicola goes out. Louka and Sergius talks for along time Louka told that Raina will marry only Bluntschli. Louka told that if he loves her he must marry her before the marriage of Raina. Sergius became angry and he called Bluntschli for a duel but Bluntschli said that he didn’t cheat him and Raina was not guilty. Bluntschli tells his whole story of, what had happened, to everybody. Raina told that Sergius only loved Louka. Catherine told that there betrothal was over but Nicola said that it is not true. At last Sergius agreed to marry Louka. Bluntschli explained about his property. When heard all these Catherine was happy and agreed for the marriage between Bluntschli and Raina. Later Bluntschli returns to his place saying that he will return after two weeks.
