betrayal in the city

Book Review   by:futar     Original Author: francis imbunga
ª

Francis imbunga''s play starts by showing the contradictiond between african culture and inherited government systems in africa. Francis cuts a clear distinction between leaders and the mass.
The play opens by showing the life of nina and doga who morn for their lost child, who was killed on an organised demonstration, which was focused on african dictatorship and corruption.
Plot is built up by imbunga by adding more characters who represent different situations and on different circumstances. For example we meet mulili an illiterate soldier who was employed and given high post because the president was his uncle. On the same scene we also meet jere who is a faithful soldier and he adores african style of life,he and mulili fell into a fight since they take different courses of reasoning,Here mulili represent the ruling class and its common habits of bulldozing the society,
Again the whole country is proven rotten and how harmful speaking the truth is, we see how those dared to open their mouths and the reveal the truth face difficulties, sometimes going to the extreme of being imprisoned for example jusper and other prisoners.
FInally somepeople gather courage and plan a revolution on which now mulili betrays the president and he realizes how bad he is.......

  1. Answer  :    mulili is illiterate. This is evident in his poor language. When he speaks with kabitoo,he thinks that he had been called a primary school kid. Jere is humane. Even after being sent to guard the grave and stop the ceremony,he sympathises with the old couple and allows them to go ahead with the ritua. Wednesday, May 07, 2014
