Electricity from waste
vegetables What do you expect when a centralized
wholesale vegetable market is located
in the heart of the city? Certainly, it would fulfill the needs of the city and its suburbs adequately, especially if it is at strategic location. But it is likely to create a headache for the civic authorities to dispose off the accumulated unsold rotten
vegetables at the end of the day. They have to make a special arrangements to take the waste in public carriers to far off places for disposal. However, If the waste can be utilized in situ by some innovative methods, it would be really commendable. This is exactly what has been done in Chennai city’s
wholesale vegetable market at koyembedu(Chennai,India). A bio-methanation plant has been installed close to the market where the rotten vegetables will be crushed to a pulp and bio-gas will be generated. Using the gas as fuel, electricity will be generated to the tune of 4,800 units per day.
