Tribological Behaviors of the Duplex-treated Surface by Ion-Nitriding + Ion-Sulphurizing

Article Abstract by: TsingHua

Original Author: CHINA SURFACE ENGINEERIGN
According to the tribological principles, a sulphide layer with excellent solid lubrication effect was produced on the nitrided
1045 steel surface by low temperature ion sulphurization technology in order to improve its tribological behavior. SEM+EDX was used to analyze the microstructure of the layer.A pin-on-disc wear tester was used to investigate the anti-scuffing, friction-reducing and wear-resistant behaviors of the original, nitrided, sulphurized, and nitrided+sulphurized surfaces systemically. EDX and AES were employed to analyze the compositions of boundary lubrication films. The results showed that sulphuration or nitriding could improve the anti-scuffing behavior of surface only at low speed, while, nitriding+ sulphuration could improve that not only at low speed but also at high speed. The wear-resistance of surface treated by nitriding+sulphuration was also increased greatly and better than that by single sulphurization or nitriding obviously, but the wear of ball rubbing against it became more serious. The nitrided substrate with high hardness could extend the endurance period of the sulphide layer, and reduce the friction and wear effectirely. A rather thick boundary lubrication film composed of iron sulphide and iron oxide could be formed on the nitrided+sulphurized surface in the friction process. which showed a good symergistic effect.
