The "Literature serving life" viewpoint of the
Literature Research Association comes into maturity on the basis of the utilitarianism
thought which has been synthetized by Shen Yanbing from such scholars as Liang Qichao, Chen Duxiu, and Zhou Zuoren. "The literature serving life" view is pseudo-realism in nature. However, it bears some features identical with the "
literature conveying morality" in the classical Chinese Literature. In addition, the theoreticians in the
Literature Research Association fail to grasp the possibility of an important theoretical breakthrough in the thought of Literature serving life". There exists, in the thought of "Literature serving life", too heavy utilitaranism ,which pushes Chinese Literature to diverge from anti-back-to-the-ancients to the advocation of back-to-the -ancients, from the opposition of "Literature conveys morality" to the upholding of "Literature conveying new morality". This finally drives Chinese Literature into a blind alley of the vital deficiency of aesthetic standards.
