Integration of Word Meaning and World Knowledge

Science has so many obscurities behind. From a small part of an organ lie a lot of uses and functions. It is unbelievable how intelligent the neuroscientists are. They have contributed a lot of helpful information. They have explained the different function of the brain and its involvement to our learning comprehension. Actually I cannot imagine how they come up to formulate and use detectors just to categorize the different events that are happening inside a human brain. The terms are very hard and I really had a hard time
understanding the article. It really took me quite so long to understand its worth.
As I was about to end reading the article one unforgettable event enters into my mind. When I was still young the only thing that comes into my mind when I hear the word “brain” is that its chief function is to identify whether we are intelligent or not. Why I come up to this description? The story goes like this; we had a group assignment as one of our requirement in school. Each of the members in the group will read a particular novel and then after a week we will have a brainstorming concerning about the novels that are assigned to us. I had this one group mate who seems to have a difficulty understanding and remembering the story of the novel assigned to him. Our group leader makes a joke and said “Siguro ang liit ng utak mo kaya hindi kasya ung buong novel?” Although it is a joke I find it disheartening and erroneous. I got curious then and think whether our brain is only used for intellectual purposes and as a detector of cleverness.
Recently there are numerous studies conducted by some neuroscientist that could explain the different functions of the brain and its relationship on one’s comprehension and memory. These studies defy our native understanding that it is the size of our brain that could tell us how intelligent we are. The article indicates that the left prefrontal cortex can assimilate the meaning of a sentence and our world knowledge related to it. For example “It is in the food chain of snakes to eat bread” by purely reading and accepting the sentence we comprehend that snakes can eat bread right? But when we consider our understanding of the snakes’ food chain, we may think that the sentence is incorrect. Snakes commonly eat meat and not bread. This is the function of the left prefrontal cortex, to integrate our understanding of a sentence and its world meaning. Another function is how Oscillatory brain can keep a record the nature of the
integration problem. In this part of the brain the character of why a sentence became fictitious is recorded.
A human brain has different purpose. Retrieving and integrating the words are just its small task. There are a lot of things to understand and to determine in the study of the human brain. Can you imagine how distinct the task of a brain is? It functions as big as the influential CEO of a reputable corporation wherein so many areas are involved and associated to it. Although it is just a small softball size brain still it can simply occupy a lot of prevailing task and purpose.
