A
teacher – was this what I was cut out to be. I was young and had dabbled in a variety of jobs. The benefits of being an
educated female- I was a graduate then- interested in
working was rare in the little town I grew up. The money was not good but it paid for a few of the luxuries I wanted to indulge in. It was a cool evening and I was returning from work. Teaching and the benefits of working in a school had just caught my attention. The working hours were few, holidays sufficient and the work was also stress free to quite an extent. I wanted to do my postgraduation and also earn while I studied. I did not need too much money at that time. So why not be a
teacher? I joined the first school that was willing to allow an ordinary graduate to teach in their school. I was appointed to teach classes III and IV English and Science. Being a Catholic my mother tongue was English and that was a pre-requisite for the job. I taught in that school for a year. I’ll tell you about my various experiences – good and bad, some other day. But today, being a mother of two children, I still want to go back to teaching children. Not for the less working hours, numerous holidays compared to an office but I feel that today I can make a difference to the students and the education system. But alas, a proper B.ed degree is a must for joining any school which I have not acquired till date. But I still enjoy teaching little things to my one year old and helping my older one with his homework. A teacher at heart, I seem to be.
