Biological
Science
The oldest as well as the most obvious
classification of the objects composing the world around us is into non-
living and living..
As we go about our daily
life activities, we meet and
interact with living
things. The varied
plants in the fields and forest, the microscopic organisms in ponds, canals and
other bodies of water; the pests, birds and all other animals around us are
part of the living world. Our relatives,
friends and classmates are also part of the living world. In other words, we are surrounded by
endlessly different forms of living things. Aside from forming part of our
surrounding, living things also play an
important role in our lives. Our food comes from plants and animals. The materials for building our houses, furniture,
utensils, and clothing may also come from
plant materials. Moreover, vitamins and minerals which are
essential for our health mostly come from plant sources. Because these living
things are important to us, we try to find ways how to produce bigger and
better crops for food - to secure food is a fundamental urge of all living
things.
When we understand how physical living things affect one
another and how they interact with the factors in their
environment, we will
appreciate our interconnectedness and care for each other and help save our
planet earth. All these and more are the
concerns of
biology.
Biology is a process of inquiry which attempts to find
answers to questions about living things.
