Book Summary   by:VijaiKSharma     Original Author: S.M.Jain
ª

Environment is the most important and necessary subject, for our very survival. We should analyze, as to why environment is getting affected, and what we should do in this respect. In seven Chapters, the author discusses its various aspects. Chapter one provides introduction, and states that now time has come for actions (and not words alone), for making life better, for the present and future generations. Chapter two talks about symbiotic relationship and making of perfect balance, so that systems and subsystems can work undisturbed. Similarly for everyone’s welfare, there should be such relations between person to person, person to systems and system to systems. Chapter three discusses the effect of population explosion on the environment, effect of agriculture, exploitation and damaging of forests, agro-forestry, fragmentation of land holdings, shortage of water, floods, water logging, use of pesticides, industrial revolution and its effect on environment, impact of emissions, effluents and wastes etc., impact of nuclear power plants and chemical industries, sound pollution and increased consumptions. Chapter four gives the details of life style based on forests. It narrates the benefits of the plant world to the mankind, and at the same time, mentions about cutting of the trees by the people. Nature provides protection and environmental balance, through the forests. Various forms of life live in a way, so that waste or dirty things are not left. The carnivorus animals are said to kill live animals, due to non-availability of dead animals.
There is ecological balance in the forest. The model based on forest is a viable and sustainable one. As per Chapter six, human beings with their brain power, can also be converted to be environment friendly. Control of the population is the first step, in this direction. We should convert the attitudes of the individuals. For reducing the involvement of the individual in five sensuous pleasures, author advises non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, non-possession and celibacy and finally disciplining the mind and the body. The concluding Chapter 7 states that the principles stated in this book should be understood, and followed by all. Further, since environment affects every one of us equally, environmental ethics should have overriding priority and importance, over all other points. Appendix-1 gives details of bibliography (41 references); Appendix-2 provides details of research on forest for food and development. Appendix-3 gives detailed comments of various persons and organizations on this project. This book discusses various aspects of environment, creates awareness and gives practical suggestions for improving the environment. It is useful for persons connected with forests, environment, students and the public at large.
