The present investigation was carried
out to select suitable shade
condition for growth and yield of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.).
The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three
replications. Suckers and stem cuttings of peppermint (Mentha
piperita L.) are rooted in the polythene bags filled with potting
mixture to get uniform planting materials. Ridges and furrows were
made at 45 cm apart. Rooted cuttings were planted at 10 cm spacing
along the ridges. High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) shade nets of
appropriate mesh size were used for providing the required shade
requirement of 25 per cent and 50 per cent. The peppermint is also
grown in the adjacent open area. The peppermint (Mentha piperita
L.) is also grown in the adjacent open area. Observations of
various growth characters were at taken at two months intervals.
Fresh and dry herbage yield were measured at the time of harvesting
(180 days after planting). Growth characters viz., plant height (34.5
cm), and number of branches (25.19) was highest under 25 per cent
shade condition. Whereas stem diameter (2.86 cm) and plant spread
(21.38 cm) was highest under open condition. Maximum fresh herbage
yield (10.10 t ha-1) and dry herbage yield (0.99 t ha-1)
were recorded under mild shade (25 per cent) condition. Among the
three shades 25 per cent shade was better for peppermint cultivation.
