Small ways to save the Earth.
Changing a light bulb to reduce the wattage of the lamp may
go a long way to save
the planet from global warming. This
is one of the
suggestions received from readers of The
Independent in
response to their invitation to readers for
their views on how to tackle global warming.
Heidi Siggers, one of the readers wrote in response that by
replacing all the light bulbs in their two bed roomed house
they could restrict the power consumption for illumination
to the level consumed by a single 60-watt lamp. She further
suggested that the Government should ban high power
consuming luminaries to reduce generation of green house
gases.
Other suggestions from respondents include- working from
homes, reducing packaging on consumer goods, compulsory
recycling, banning four wheelers from cities etc. But
whether the ways are small or big, one thing is certain
that people desperately want politicians to stir into
action so that the suggestions can be implemented.
The underlying hypothesis of these suggestions is that for
every one of us who would adjust his life style to suit the
environmental ethics, there would be many more who need to
be told, encouraged and if that also failed then to be
coerced into adopting the desired lifestyles.
