Pregnancy is a normal and phisiological event in humans.95% of pregnancies end without major complications.A new baby is
usually a source of joy and celebrations in most families. It is said that almost every woman desires child birth at one stage of her life or another. And that this desire is inherent in women. This has been echoed in various Islamic injunctions. What happens when thewife/wives get sick and need medication?Although the husband is not obliged(but rather recommended) to pay for his wife''s cosmetics, doctor''s fees, the purchase of medicine for her and other similar expences but he must pay for expenditure connected with child birth. This has made it mandatory for husbands to take a good care of their wives in
pregnancy, labour and puerperium even if the wife is divorce in pregnancy/lactation.As mentioned earlier ,pregnancy and the problems arising thereof must also be considered over the background of other socio economic factors that may aggravate or worsen the health condition of the parturient. These factors appropriately include lack of knowledge/education,poverty and delay in receiving the appropriate care.
We must remember problems during pregnancy could arise early, throughout pregnancy,in labour or even during the post delivery period. Some of the problems could be fatal or result in severe
morbidity.Nigeria has the highest morbidity rate in the world over.Within Nigeria, Northern Nigeria is the worst affected region with figures up to 2000 deaths per 100,000 live births.
