vertical farming-a viable option to meet growing food demand

Book Abstract by: SATYANARAYANGUPTA

Original Author: Dickson D. Despommier
The advent of agriculture catalyzed the transformation of
the human condition from that of hunter gatherer to world

citizen.Almost every commercial farming scheme due to
demand for cash crops, they require more quantity of
fertilizers.Beceuse of more use of fertilizers, lot of weed
is coming out in the farm.To control it ,use of herbicide
have become necessary. In commercial farming, mostly single
crop is grown which invites pests and diseaases. That also
requires lot of fungicides and pesticides to contol it.
As a result ,the higher and higher doses of these products
are needed to do the same job as the year before.this is
by,the sigle most damaging source of pollution world wide
is agriculture runoff.Human health risk is undoubtedly
associated with high exposure to agrochemicals and illness
associated with them have been identified. These illness
takes a huge toll of human health, disabling lagre
population, thus removing them from the flow of commerce
especially in poor countries. It is reasonable to axpect
that as the human population continue to grow, these
problems will worsen at ever increasing rate.
To address these problems and those perceived to soon
emerge onto the horizon,an alternative way of food
production was proposed namely growing large amount of
produce within the confines of high rise buildings. The
vertical farming project was estabilished in year 2001 at
Columbia University in New York City. There are some reasons
to adopt this technology-1)Year the round production 2)No
failure of crop 3)Food will be grown organically 4)
Eliminates agriculture runoff 5)Convert abandoned urban
properties into food production centre 6)Create sustainable
environment for urban centres. There must be strong
Government supported economic incentives to private sectors
as well as universities and local Government to fully
develop the concept. It could be better solution in future
to meet food demand with free natural landscape.
