The theists believe that
conscience is a god--given faculty to discern the right and wrong. If one listens
to its clear but inaudible promptings, one will be guided in he right path. .This is given to man so that he may discern what is right and what is wrong. The judgment of the conscience is the will of god , they say. There are many authors who believe that man has a sense of right and wrong inbuilt in him. But is there a universal conscience? Is there
absolutely true or false things and actions in the world? What is good for you is bad for another and vice versa. If you go into my write-ups on Right and Wrong in shvoong, you will be surprised to find that there is nothing absolutely right or absolutely wrong. It all depends on the region, society, culture, and religions one practices. Conscience is evolved according to the
prevailing moral codes and beliefs. There is no universal conscience at all and the god established one seems to be simply the invention of the religions. The conscience of different people of different regions and religions are totally different. An orthodox Buddhist if he steps on ant even inadvertently, feels a lot of remorse than perhaps what a catholic feels when he commits a mortal sin. The slaughter of a cow will sting the conscience of a Hindu and not that of a Christian or Moslem. A parent in the US does not fell agitated or wrong when his/her daughter has sex with a boy who is her friend. A man may not feel any remorse at all if he has an extra marital relationship with a woman unlike say, in India. The promptings of your conscience is as per the prevailing codes of conduct and it has nothing to do with any god.
