Peace - how important is the content of this word! Can a society or the whole world flourish on economic, political, social and religious levels without having at its centre peace, which is critical for the whole of human evolution and is the driving force of existence?
The very base of existence is supposed to be silence and peace. Before man came into being, everything was harmonious, peaceful and beautiful. Chaos started with the advent of man. Even if we have succeeded in securing a very high place in the field of technology and other material spheres, do we really have peace? Is there peace in the Middle East? Is the African continent with its Rwanda, Sudan and other such nations in peace? It is strange: barbarism is invading every country and this is being reflected in social activities like football, elections, business and politics. Yet, nothing is being done to eliminate the root of this evil. How can we live in a world of harmony and peace when within ourselves we are already in chaos? The outer situation is only an expression of the inner state of our being. And the blunt truth is that in everybody, from the greatest leaders in politics and religion to the common man, the same unrest is present. Greed, anger, lust, hatred and jealousy are motivating every human being to a great pandemonium.
It is indeed surprising that though the leaders of society know that without inner peace nothing can be achieved, yet nothing really effective is being done. Even if there is any mild outcry for peace anywhere, it is only a lip-service. Education in human values, living values, model UN programs, seminars, commandments, prayers, rituals and celebration of festivals, be they religious, social or cultural, have all failed and will continue to do so. When shall we understand that 95.5% of unconsciousness is not a child’s play to do away with? Psychology and religion will have to join forces so as to help to make the greatest revolution in the psyche of man on an international level. A global mind change is the only thing that can save us from the apocalyptic prediction of St. John. Leaders will have to come forward courageously and open the debate in all sincerity without any hidden agenda.
Scientists can be of great help in that endeavour. It may be good to explore the far ends of space. Much more important than all this, however, is to direct their knowledge in showing the oneness of life, and the beautiful and mysterious way in which all creatures and the whole cosmos function at a very fundamental level as one entity. Religion will show how to live and experience that so as to eliminate all differences of caste, religion itself, sex, creed and other human-created barriers. The greatest responsibility goes to the governing bodies and active social groups. They will have to create the atmosphere and provide the necessary facilities for religion to flourish not as a sect, but as a science. The different religions are but only different approaches to the same inner peace.
The Hindu religion has a beautiful prayer which starts like this: “Shantakaram bhujanga shayanam” meaning “the One whose form is silence and who is lying on a bed of snake.” Here, reference is made to Vishnu, one of the divinities of the Hindu Trinity. It is all symbolical. Our whole being, with our mind and ten senses, are like the many-headed snake called Shesha in the Hindu mythology and upon which lies Vishnu, the soul free from all motions, essentially a silence which surpasses all words. To attain such a state is called meditation. The mind will have to be transformed, rid of all its impurities and turmoil so that inner peace flows through the ten senses, which are the media of communication with the outer world. At present, greed, lust, hatred, jealousy and other poisons are flowing from these senses.
Meditation is for everyone. In fact, everyone carries it in the depth of his being, whether we accept or deny it. Every individual should attain it, then the entire society will flourish in all spheres. From there, world peace will ensue. Without it, forget world peace and paradis terrestre! It is time to go beyond rituals, conceptions and isms. Life is a scientific force, therefore plenitude of life or oneness of life and épanouissement de la vie will come through a scientific and spiritual perception of life. Neither science nor religion is a belief; they are based on understanding and experience. The bold decision to accept our actual ignorance and to learn are of utmost importance in the trek of mind transformation for a better world.
