“WHY SHOULD WE
RECYCLE COMPUTERS”
These days, it’s not so easy to buy a new computer if your old one is torn and beaten by time, especially in a country like this, wherein there are no good “second-hands”.
Although it’s not convenient, experts encourage people to recycle computers. It’s not like that the people who recycle
COMPUTERS will earn “big” money from it, but the point is, if they recycle, they help conserve
raw materials. And it’s great to think that you’re environmental-savvy.
How to recycle a computer? That’s a good question. If you decide to buy a new computer, don’t dump your old unit in the garbage can, instead, go to the nearest computer recycling center, (Maritrans Electronics Scrap Export or Hewlett-Packard Recycling Center, in particular) and sell your old unit. They will give you a little cash in exchange for what you call “your junk”, and they will take care of dumping it, in an earth-friendly way.
But first, they’ll pull out tin, silicon, iron, aluminum, copper, gold, mercury and even plastics, which can be used in future computer production. Electronic
devices such as televisions, stereos, VCRs and mobile phones are no exception; these things also contain valuable
substances and raw
materials that can be used over and over again, for a
long time, such as lead, cadmium, chromium and radioactive isotopes. If we succeed collecting many of these things from old computers and electronic devices, we don’t have to damage the earth again by getting raw materials. It would be enough for another batch of computer production.
Besides, it’s better to recycle your old computer rather than store it somewhere in inside your house, or you do your own way of dumping it, because there are so many hazardous substances and elements in it, like lead, cadmium, that can harm your skin if you’re exposed too long and dioxins that can suffocate and choke you to death if you store it too long inside the house.
