Omraki and her 77-year-old husband Charan Singh Panwar, a retired farmer, were desperate to have a son and heir to the family's smallholdings. In order to pay for an IVF treatment needed by his wife to conceive, Charan sold his buffalos, mortgaged his land, spent his life savings and took out a loan.
The couple already has two grown-up daughters, and five grandchildren, but needed a son to fulfill certain religious functions as mandated by Hindu tradition. Per Hindu practice and belief, only sons are allowed to kindle the funeral pyre of their late parents and to assist in the soul salvation.
