Genetically Modified Crops

Article Summary by: tsriyaa

Original Author: T S Priyaa

Genetically modified crops are the crops of the next generation. While people eagerly await them as they are nutritious,
disease and pest resistant, the overshadowed side of them is that their making is very costly and they have their own side effects on the body. For example, the genetically modified soya proved to be lethal to mammals, while on the contrary, the golden rice proved to be more delicious than the normal kind and had good supplement of vitamin E and A. In the long run, its cost might come down as well as production might increase.
The genetically modified crops are produced by introducing the gene of desired trait into the plant cell. If the required protein expresses adequately, then the plant is checked for allergies, ie ,if it would cause any undesired effect on human. These tests are usually performed on mice.
Disadvantages of genetically modified crops include the high cost, the possible undesirable side effects and the loss of original taste. In addition, if the gene for pest resistance is transferred to weeds which gain the pest resistant property. As a result, this would promote weed growth.
However if the edibility is checked and these problems are resolved the GM crops would come a long way and help in easy cure of vitamin and protein deficiency .
