The trend to go and settle abroad is catching the fancy of thousands of young Indians who aspire to join the hot race towards
favored destinations like America (US), Britain (UK), Germany, France and Australia for higher education & better job prospects & higher standard of living. Many even settle in these nations not only because they are paid higher salaries but also due to the facilities extended by these nations, which helps them in improving their standard of living to a greater extent. Since past five decades
India has been complaining about Brain Drain but factually no concrete steps have been taken to improve the situation. Many of our major cities are a host to some of the most reputed & elite Public schools & Universities like IITs (india Institutes of Technology) & IIMs (India Institutes of Management) which share a world class standard. The government & the people of India spend a lot on the progress & over-all development of these bright minds, so that tomorrow they use their talent in the over-all progress of this country. But what happens is these talented brigth minds are hired & used by foreign institutions & multinationals for their own development. Is this not a shameful fact for us? Many argue that if other nations are providing higher salaries & better facilities than those provided by us, how & why should we stop these bright minds from getting hired? As a result we are facing a heavy loss & other nations are taking advantage of this loss. India-born space engineer Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian-American woman to be sent to space became role-model not only for millions of Indian women but also for many women world-wide. Even though she was of Indian origin she was called an American Space Astronaut. In beginning of the year 2005, the American government decided to relax the limit on the Visas granted to foreign Scientists & Academicians. Most notable thing of all, in the U.S. National Academy of Engineers, the Scroll of Honor of 2005 contained names of many foreign nationals including the names of 74 new scientists of which 5 were of Indian origin namely, i. Mr. Subhash Mahajan – Chairman – Chemicals & Material
Engineering, Division, Arizona State University; ii. Mr. Aruanava Mujumdar – Mechanical Engineering Professor, California University, Berkley;iii .Mr. R. Shankar Nayar - Principal and Senior Vice President Primary Work Institution: Teng & Associates, Chicago;iv. Raja V. Ramani - Professor Emeritus, Mining Engineering and Geo-Environmental Engineering, Pennsylvania State University;v. Subhash C. Singhal - Director of Fuel Cells research, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Washington. These reputed Indian gentlemen were awarded for excellence & outstanding contribution in Semi-Conductors, Fuel Cells, Nano Technology, Civil Engineering, Minning Engineering & safety. These five specialists have now joined the elite list of 2000 engineers of which 50 engineers are of Indian origins who have now become permanent members of National engineering & science division. Previous year, of those who were honored comprised of the names of Mr. Hawkins & Mr. Bill Gates. Also in this prestigious list among the names of many Indian scientists were names of Dr. Hargobind Khurana & Dr.S. Chandrshekhar. Whenever the issue of Brain Drain is debated the most commonly maintained point is that these bright intellectuals donot get the respect & recognition to their efforts & work in India. In the earlier times this point could have been accepted to a certain limit but now the times have changed. If these bright people are ready to work hard, even in India they can rise to highest positions. Today a youngster working in any field receives the acceptance & respect in whichever field he chooses to work. Why not take the example of sports where more than half of the population of youngsters look upto Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza & Anju Bobby George as their idols. India ranks first in Milk production world over & the success of this can attributed to Dr. Vargij Korean’s Operation Flood. Mr. E. Shridharan who completed the technological marvel Konkan railways in record time, also heads (Director general) Metro Railways Delhi.Mr. Amitabh Bachan is now recognized not just as a super-star of Indian Cinema but also an Internationally acclaimed star whose played the most diversified roles including the host of Super series Kaun Banega Crorepati. The Ambanis, the Tata Groups, the Mittal Groups & many other such names are there who have established themselves globally. Many Indian women have won Miss Universe & Miss World titles but none have established themselves as successfully as Aishwarya Rai whose got invitation even from Cannes Film festival. In this world of globalization India has contributed in the fields of communications, biotechnology, steel manufacturing & many such diversified technologies with the best of the talents. Looking at the way India is progressing & achieving success in various fields, a day will soon come when the problem of Brain Drain will no longer be an issue of debate & the many talented & young minds from world over come to India & the scholarly people working for/in other countries would return back & do the work for the development & progress of this country.
