In November 2005, a young french woman underwent a face
transplant under the watchful eyes of Dr. Dubernard and his skilled
team of surgeons. The woman had been savaged by her dog as she slept and woke up, only to find that her nose, cheeks and chin had been
completely disfigured. The circumstances to this strange event are not completely clear but there is evidence to suggest that she had taken several sleeping pills and this is why she had not been awoken by the dog. This amazing story has caused much controversy within the medical world as the skin used for the graft was of a young woman who was reportedly in a long-term coma and the family had agreed for her facial features to be taken and used for the
transplant. Some people are obviously against this type of surgery and see it as unnecessary and almost grotesque to have someone's else's face. Would this mean a loss of identity or can these procedures really make a difference to the victim's life? There has since been another heard of case of face transplantation but will we hear of them more in the future and will it become a purely cosmetic demand of both celebrities and onlookers alike?
