The world of
forensic science has often been a mystry to many of our time. For years the
technology and science used behind its cause has been kept a secret to
society. But then there is this new era where education is considered a primary resouce for any person
to live with.Forensic science has hence opened up knowledge for us.People now have the exposure to learn
the ways of foensic investigations. Forensic science
has its unique way to look at a 'crime scene'.Evidence can vary from a drop of blood on the floor to the blood splatter on the floor caused by any weapon, from a piece of hair from a victim toa minute sample of DNA,from tool marks on the wall to
marking pattern on a victim, from finger print on the door knob to cigerette buts on an astray. All of
these are evidences and everyone is a supect. Scientists use
different techniques to sort out evidences that lead to a crimescene. The main
aim isalways to link the victim to the crime scene, crimescene
to the sespect and the suspect to the victim. The most important fact is to find the 'motive' behind
the crime.Investigators depend on these basic facts while linking the crime to a suspect. Some common tools
used in the forensic laboratory are:DNA analysers where scientists use DNA
samples to find a link between the sustect and crimescene or to
check for traces of disintegration. The time of death in the morgue is usually calculated by
extracting bacteria from a dead bodyand testing its age in hours as bacteria feed on dead
bodies. This is a very compicated method. The size of the bacteria is measured in microscopic units and hence its size is comapared with a known bacteria of similar age.The tool mark identifier is a microscope used to compare
tool marks to a suspect tool used in the crime for a match.Fingerprint analyser is another computer generated tool
to compare fingerprints. Two separate fingerprints can never be alike, unlike shoeprints which could be
identical but sometimes shoeprints can be extremely helpful in determining the height, weight and the stucture
of an anonymous suspect.Moulds of the shoe prints are taken from muddy surfaces for this reason.Tireprints are also helpful as evidence and are essential in unmasking crime
in car accidents.Tires make unique patterns on the road surface. These patterns help in calculating the speed of the vehicle, and for any pattern change in the tire threads investigators can point out specific reasons behind it.Guns and bullets are a very part of a crime scene where
death is caused by gunfire.Just like two separate fingerprint no 2 bullet markings are alike. Each barrel of
a gun has its different identity.Another factor is the gunpowder residue on the victim or
the suspects hands are crucial in determing the distance at which the bullet were shot and how fatal
it could have been. This is important as many murders are masked from the
real cause of death.Chemical analysers run down frequency tests for chemicals
recovered from a crime scene. This is important in cases of poisoning. There are also evidences like broken cassette, disc, floppy
recovered from the crime scene which can be processed by specialists who use specially made hardware and
softwares.Other than these there are other techniques used by
forensics. Each new crime bring up a variety of new techniques.Recent discoveries like the 'lie detector' which can
detect lies have brought up new generation of AI(artificial intelligence). No matter how
clever a criminal may be new advances in forensic science brings crime closer
& closer to punishment.May be someday people will be even scared to
think about crime.
